Members of a US congressional committee investigating the Jeffrey Epstein case have intensified their calls for Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, the former prince, to answer questions about his ties to the late financier and sex offender.

King Charles stripped his brother of the title of prince and evicted him from his mansion in the grounds of Windsor Castle on Thursday, responding to the outrage that had built around Mr Mountbatten Windsor over years of damaging headlines about his behaviour.

Buckingham Palace said the censures were needed even though Mr Mountbatten Windsor has continued to deny the allegations made against him.

In the US, the king’s move led to more calls for Mr Mountbatten Windsor to reveal all he knows about Epstein, particularly in the light of the expression of sympathy for victims of abuse in Thursday’s statement from the palace.

The BBC reported on Saturday that at least four Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee investigating the US government’s handling of the Epstein case had renewed calls for Mr Mountbatten Windsor to testify.

Democratic congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi told the BBC that he would be willing to formally summon Mr Mountbatten Windsor with a subpoena, although such an action would be difficult to enforce while the former prince was not on US soil.

“Come clean, come before the US Congress, voluntarily testify, don’t wait for a subpoena,” Mr Krishnamoorthi said.
“Come and testify and tell us what you know.

“Not just to give justice to the survivors but to prevent this from ever happening again.”

The committee is controlled by Republicans, who have not yet indicated whether they would support such a move.

Another Democratic congressman, Suhas Subramanyam, said Mr Mountbatten Windsor could appear remotely with a lawyer and speak to the panel privately.

“Frankly, Andrew’s name has come up many times from the victims,” he told the BBC’s Radio 4.

“So he clearly has knowledge of what happened, and we just want him to come forward and tell us what he knows.

“If he wants to clear his name, if he wants to do right by the victims, he will come forward.”

Buckingham Palace has been asked to comment.

On Friday, UK trade minister Chris Bryant told the BBC that Mr Mountbatten Windsor should go to the US to answer questions about Epstein.

Two of Epstein’s accusers, Anouska De Georgiou and Liz Stein, also added their voices to the calls for the former prince to appear before the US Congress.

The police watchdog for England and Wales, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, said that, in light of media reports about Mr Mountbatten Windsor, it had contacted the Metropolitan Police to “understand if there are any matters that would meet the criteria for a referral to us”.

In response, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said that in 2016 officers had concluded that “other jurisdictions and organisations” were better placed to pursue the specific allegations, and a decision was made not to proceed to a full criminal investigation.
