NFL Free Agency: Can Kansas City Chiefs Keep Super Defense Together in 2024?

Could the Kansas City Chiefs keep both Chris Jones and L’Jarius Sneed in free agency? Perhaps, but it will take some serious effort.

LAS VEGAS — This was the year it all came together for Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

For much of the Patrick Mahomes Era, it was the offense carrying more than its own share. But the script flipped in 2023, with the Chiefs ranking top five in points (17.3 per game), yards (298.2), yards per play (4.7), yards per pass (5.4), sack rate (10.3%), and first downs (17.6).

That defense very well could be the difference in Sunday’s Super Bowl 58 showdown with the San Francisco 49ers.

But if it is, the weird reality is it’ll become even harder to keep that special group together in 2024.

Kansas City Chiefs 2024 Free Agency Outlook
Every team experiences change every offseason, but the Chiefs’ defense could look dramatically different in 2024 because seven starters and/or key contributors are set to become free agents.

Those seven players have a combined eight Super Bowl rings and accounted for a whopping 40.1% of the Chiefs’ total defensive snaps in the regular season.

With $23.9 million in projected cap space even before restructuring Patrick Mahomes’ contract, which seems likely, the Chiefs should have the resources to make competitive offers to most — but certainly not all — of the following players.
