Selena Gomez set the internet ablaze with a photo of her vintage-inspired engagement ring, marking the start of a new diamond trend for 2025
Her fiancé, Benny Blanco, chose a marquise-cut diamond ring.
It was only a few months ago that the internet was set ablaze when Selena Gomez first announced her engagement to producer and songwriter Benny Blanco on social media in December 2024. After a whirlwind romance that began at the start of summer in 2023, Blanco reportedly proposed to Gomez at an impromptu gathering of close friends and family members. For longtime fans of the musician, actress, and entrepreneur, the couple’s engagement announcement was met with much excitement, especially surrounding her dazzling diamond ring. Although there is always a great deal of cultural fascination surrounding celebrity engagement rings, there is a well-founded reason why everyone can’t get enough of Gomez’s vintage-inspired band—or at least that’s the stance of Shane & Co.’s Director of Bridal Merchandising, Amanda Trevizo. “Honestly, Selena’s gorgeous engagement ring is not only timeless, but some of the adjustments made make it uniquely hers,” she told InStyle.
The ring features an 8-carat marquise-cut diamond set on yellow gold pavé shoulders and a wrap-around eternity band, giving it an estimated value of between $250,000 and $1 million. As previously reported, the newly engaged couple spent months designing the ring with the design team at Abril Barret. The meticulous attention to detail is something that Trevizo believes has made Gomez’s diamond feel so rare in comparison to other stars’ gemstones. “The stone alone makes the ring a one-of-a-kind. It was likely hand-selected by her fiancé, which makes it all the more special. But the size of the stone (estimated between 6-8 carats) and its high sparkle and beautiful clarity, set it apart from other celebrity engagement rings,” she explained.
In addition to the size of the gemstone, what makes Gomez’s band particularly special is that the ring was, in Trevizo’s words, “a special ode to her lyrics.” The singer’s longtime obsession with marquise-cut stones isn’t a secret, as her Billboard hit “Good For You,” featuring A$AP Rocky, notoriously states, “I’m a marquise diamond, could even make that Tiffany jealous.” It’s the special meaning behind Gomez’s engagement ring that ultimately led the couple to build a ring that would showcase and celebrate the shape of the marquise-cut stone. While this specific gemstone cut has been around since the late 18th century, it’s often been overlooked as a noteworthy diamond trend, until the “Revival” singer’s recent engagement.
“The Marquise is hot right now and only growing in popularity. While oval continues to dominate in the industry, the marquise allows for the same elongated look while being a bit sharper and precise in feel. The oval reads as romantic and soft, whereas a marquise can have a similar feel but with a slightly more distinctive design,” Trevizo elaborated. Beyond recreating Gomez’s own special ring, there are other added benefits to adopting this specific cut. As Trevizo explained, “The stone will typically look larger than what the carat weight is, this is typical of an elongated stone but really shines through with the points on a marquise. The elongated shape can also make the finger look longer. The marquise is also typically cut like a round diamond with a brilliant cut, which means they come with a ton of sparkle.” Essentially, the same old gemstone cuts that have dominated the bridal sector over the last few years are likely to be sidelined in favor of this unique shape in the next year, thanks to Gomez.
It’s unlikely that Gomez’s influence will stop solely at what gemstone shapes will become popular in the next year. There will likely be a resurgence of customers trying to mimic their engagement ring customizations, similarly to Gomez, according to Trevizo. Of course, not everyone has an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion, which allows them to spend a fortune on creating a one-of-a-kind ring. But that’s not necessarily something that can prohibit you from an option that’s good for you.“There is always a way to make a piece your own while working with a jeweler without breaking the bank”, Trevizo assured.
Her advice for finding an engagement ring that rivals Gomez’s engagement ring? “Consider looking at a few loose stones to find one that’s signature to you. Other than that, adopting the marquise shape will always remain the simplest way to attain a truly show-stopping ring.” With a myriad of luxury jewelry brands releasing their spin on the marquise-cut stone trend, there’s no better time to buy into this diamond trend. Whether you’re hoping to emulate a similar engagement ring for your proposal, or just want to treat yourself to a gift, there’s an option ahead that could even make that Tiffany’s jealous, or in this case, Gomez herself.
