Whoopi said if you don’t use your health insurance for the whole year they should give you money back…see more videos
Whoopi Goldberg made a surprise return to The View on Thursday as she continues to recover from double pneumonia and sepsis. And along with a big thank you for all the love and support she received, the 63-year-old Oscar winner came with a message about health insurance.
“One of the things that I discovered, and I’m sure many people already know this, is that your insurance really doesn’t do much for you. And the people who are saying ‘no’ to you in insurance are not doctors. They are people who are looking at algorithms and things,” Goldberg said. “And it got me to thinking: ‘Why is it that I’ve been paying insurance for almost 60 years and it hasn’t rolled over, you know what I mean? Who told them they could use that money when I wasn’t using it?’”
The talk show host suggested that this would be a good issue for some of the young politicians who have entered the fray recently to sink their teeth into — because this is an issue that voters can change.
“These are things that we have the power to take care of. This is us,” Goldberg said.
And while the relationship with insurance and doctors is a complicated one, Goldberg offered up at least one place to start.
“I think doctors should not be on insurance boards. That to me is a conflict of interest,” Goldberg said. “Doctor’s job is to do no harm. When insurance denies your child or your mother or your aunt something, they are doing harm. Y’all have to be the advocate for yourself.”
Goldberg, who released a video statement last week discussing her near-death medical scare, said the illness was “hard” and “scary” for her and her family, and said she hopes that serves as a cautionary tale for everyone.
