WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump rejected two bipartisan bills on Tuesday, marking the first vetoes of his second term.

The first is a bill that would complete the Arkansas Valley Conduit, a pipeline that would bring water to communities in southeastern Colorado. The second bill gave control of its tribal lands to the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians in Florida. They are suing the Trump administration over the construction of the immigration detention center, Alligator Alcatraz.

“Enough is enough. My Administration is committed to preventing American taxpayers from funding expensive and unreliable policies. Ending the massive cost of taxpayer handouts and restoring fiscal sanity is vital to economic growth and the fiscal health of the Nation. For these reasons, I cannot support the Finish the Arkansas Valley Conduit Act. Therefore, it is my duty to return H.R. 131 to the House of Representatives without my approval,” Trump said in a message to Congress.

Both bills had bipartisan support.

“President Trump’s first veto of his second term blocks a bipartisan bill that both the House and Senate passed unanimously, costs taxpayers nothing, and delivers safe, reliable water to rural communities that overwhelmingly supported him,” Colorado senators said ina joint statement.

Trump said the new law would not allow for any new construction spending on the pipeline project, but only fix the terms of repaying the cost, sparking a debate about the federal government’s role in funding infrastructure projects.

While explaining the veto for the tribal lands bill, Trump wrote the tribe was “actively sought to obstruct reasonable immigration policies that the American people decisively voted for when I was elected.”

Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo, backed the Arkansas Valley Conduit bill. Although Trump did not refer to her in the rejection, Boebert suggested the reason for the veto was “political retaliation.”

I sincerely hope this veto has nothing to do with political retaliation for calling out corruption and demanding accountability. Americans deserve leadership that puts people over politics,” Boebert said in a statement on social media.
Boebert is referring to her call to release the Epstein files. Members of the Trump administration met with the congresswoman in the Situation Room to discuss the release.
