Vice President JD Vance fired back at MSNBC host Jen Psaki after she made a remark about wanting to “save” second lady Usha Vance.
“I always wonder what’s going on in the mind of his wife,” Psaki said on the “I’ve Had It” podcast released Tuesday. “Like are you OK? Please blink four times. Come over here, we’ll save you.”
JD Vance on Thursday called Psaki’s comments “disgraceful.”
“But of course the second lady can speak for herself,” he told reporters in Israel. “I am very lucky to have a wonderful wife and I know — at least I hope — that my wife feels the same about me. … I’m honored to have Usha by my side on this trip in particular, but always.”
Psaki, a former White House press secretary under Joe Biden, has been heavily criticized by the White House and conservative commentators since the podcast clip went viral.
Fox News host Lawrence Jones erupted in outrage Wednesday, accusing the former White House press secretary of “slander” for mocking the Vances’ marriage
“She should apologize,” Jones said on “Fox and Friends.”
“Jen Psaki was a jerk – just a ‘mean girl,’ ” Newsmax anchor Greta Van Susteren wrote Thursday in a post on X.

Last week, liberal podcast host Jennifer Welch accused the vice president of not doing enough to defend his wife and two children against racist attacks during an appearance on MSNBC’s “All In with Chris Hayes.”
Welch’s comment came as JD Vance faced backlash for downplaying racist, sexist and antisemitic messages in a leaked group chat of Young Republicans.
“Here’s two things about JD Vance,” Welch said during her Oct. 15 appearance on the show. “Number one, he used to say Trump is America’s Hitler. So he has regressed.
“And then number two, he is married to a woman of Indian descent. He has mixed race children. So to all of the MAGA voters out there, if this man will not defend his wife and will not defend his kids, do you think he gives a crap about you or anything to do with you?”
Far-right social media accounts and commentators have been documented launching racist attacks at Usha Vance, the first Indian American second lady in U.S. history, even before her husband officially joined Donald Trump’s presidential ticket in July 2024.
The week following JD Vance’s nomination saw a spike in racist and misogynistic social media posts, according to a report from ABC News. Far-right accounts criticized him for marrying someone who is non-white, expressed concerns about an influx of Indian immigrants and referenced a fabricated white nationalist conspiracy theory.
And an analysis by All in Together, a non-profit supporting voting-age women, found that there were “approximately 1,800 unique public posts and 16,000 public social media posts containing racist and/or gendered attacks against Usha Vance with a possible reach of 216 million accounts” between Jan. 1 and Aug. 11, 2024.
